In the eastern Tuli Block there are as many as 1 000 Elephants (Loxodonta africana) at any one time, with sightings on Shalimpo commonplace. Shalimpo boasts some very large specimens of Leadwood (Combretum imberbe), mashatu (Xanthocercis zambesiaca), Fever (Acacia xanthophloea) and Sycamore (Ficus sycomorus) trees within a landscape that varies between riverine forest and semi-arid bush.
There is a healthy and growing Lion (Panthera leo) population in Tuli, but sightings on Shalimpo are rare. Other predators found in the area include Leopards (Panthera pardus), Bat-eared Foxes (Otocyon megalotis), Black-backed Jackals (Canis mesomelas), Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus), Spotted Hyenas (Crocuta crocuta), Civets (Civettictis civetta) and Genets (Genetta sp.).
Buck ranging from small Steenbok (Raphicerus campestris) to the large Eland (Taurotragus oryx) and a profusion of birdlife make for interesting and enjoyable game viewing on Shalimpo. The region is home to the birder's 'Big 6' - Pel's Fishing Owl (Scotopelia peli), Saddlebilled Stork (Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis), Martial Eagle (Polemaetus bellicosus), Kori Bustard (Ardeotis kori), Ground Hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri) and Lappet-faced vulture (Torgos tracheliotus) - and is considered an outstanding birding area, especially during the summer months.
